These online methodologies give participants the opportunity to thoughtfully answer questions about their perceptions and expectations on their own time and at their own pace. Because participants have the freedom and time to be more active and introspective, their responses are often more detailed and provide deeper insights.
Online Bulletin Boards
Bulletin board focus groups enable a detailed discussion to occur over an extended period of time. People who might typically decline the invitation to be part of a real-time group, for which they would need to travel to a central site at a specific time, find it easier to participate. A certain degree of interactivity can be achieved among participants; participants can also choose to respond privately and not share answers with the entire group. The moderator can ask follow-up probes based on the responses received in addition to the new set of questions provided each day. Clients can log on at any time to view responses.
Online Diaries
Providing another convenient approach, online diaries can capture participants’ day-to-day experiences and emotions. A dedicated, secure Web site is established specifically for the study. The site is accessible only by participants, researchers and client observers. Each day during the study, participants are asked to complete activities that reveal their experiences and provide insight into their attitudes, preferences and beliefs. In addition to responding to stimuli, participants are able to post their own images and text. Everything is posted on the Web, where the project team can watch participants’ experiences unfold as they happen. The end result is a deep understanding of the topic as seen through the eyes of the participants.
